Camping in Rishikesh is available most of the year. The best timing affects your comfort, river conditions, and the types of available camps. Seasons impact water levels for rafting. They also change evening temperatures for bonfires and affect weekend crowds.
Use this guide to find the perfect stay for your dates. Choose from riverside, beach, or luxury cottages. This way, you’ll know what to expect before booking.
March-June (spring & early summer)
In May and June, temperatures start mild and climb to 20-35°C. Rafting the 9 km and 16 km stretches is fun. Yet, it’s better to book morning slots to skip the afternoon heat and winds. If you’re sensitive to heat, choose AC cottages or pool camps. Shaded spots by the Ganga near Shivpuri and Marine Drive are perfect for sunrise walks.
Pack a light layer for the evening. Don’t forget a cap, sunscreen, and closed sandals with straps. Also, plan for café or forest breaks during the day to stay comfortable.
July-September (monsoon)
The valley turns lush and the air cools, but river levels can rise quickly, and plans may change. Beach camps pause for safety. Some riverside activities have been cut back. Rafting status relies on permits and daily water levels. If you like peaceful, green views and relaxed days, pick luxury AC cottages.
Ensure they have a reliable power backup. Also, check activity times 24 to 48 hours before you arrive. Roads can be slick. So, pack quick-dry clothes, an extra pair of shoes, and a torch. Also, keep a flexible plan. Focus on yoga, short nature walks, and local cafés in Tapovan or Byasi.
October-February (post-monsoon to winter)
After the rains, the skies clear. Views become crisp, and weekends grow popular starting in October. Daytime is nice, with temperatures between 10 and 25°C. But nights in December and January can get cold. This is perfect for bonfires, as long as you bring warm layers. Riverside stays are back open! Enjoy easy access to rafting and seasonal beach camping.
Beach camping usually runs from October to May when the riverbanks are stable. Luxury cottages and upgraded tents are great for families with kids or seniors. They come with private washrooms, power backup, and quieter nights. Book early for holiday weekends. Ask about quiet hours. Also, check how far the camp is from the river. Many good spots are 200-500 m from the Ganga.
Quick picks to decide faster.
Want river vibes and sunrise walks? Oct-Mar (weekday stays are calmer).
Travelling with kids or seniors? Oct-Mar, or luxury/AC cottages in winter.
On a tighter budget? Weekdays in Oct-Dec and Feb-May at simple riverside or beach camps.
Hate heat? Avoid late Apr-Jun unless you choose AC/pool properties.
Rafting depends on river levels and permits, so reconfirm close to your dates.
